About the Cities
Dufur
The City of Dufur, incorporated in 1893, is the second-largest community
in Wasco County. Located 13 miles south of the Oregon/Washington
state line, Dufur is nestled between Mount Hood and the Deschutes
River among rolling hills that produce wheat and other grains.
Maupin
The town of Maupin was built because of easy access to springs
and the opportunity to ferry across the Deschutes River.
Howard Maupin and his son Perry started the first ferry in 1672.
It was the only crossing from the mouth of the Deschutes to Bend
except for the toll bridge at Sherar’s Falls.
In 1910 the town had scattered frame buildings, a small school, and
a church and parsonage. The ferry was still the reason for the town
until 1911-1912 when two railroads were built up the canyon from
the Columbia River and on to Bend.
In 1912 a bridge was built that made a connecting link on the future
Dalles-California Highway. In 1921 a fine concrete bridge was built.
For a short while both bridges stood together until the old one was
dismantled. The business section of town has not changed that much
since 1923, but there is a house on every available lot.
In 1921 a fire, driven by strong easterly winds, leveled virtually
the entire town. Within two years the undiscouraged inhabitants rebuilt
the settlement.
